Things to do

If you plan on making the journey to Crete, there is far more to explore than Rethymno, so we've come up with a few recommendations:

Old Rethymno Town

Explore Rethymno's fascinating fort, sip a refreshing cocktail at the marina, or stroll through the quaint boutiques with one of their unique sheep-milk gelatos in hand. This town offers a blend of Venetian and Turkish influences, providing an array of architecture, culture, and culinary experiences.

Previli Beach

This secluded paradise, 45 minutes South of Rethymno, is nestled between rocky cliffs and blue water. Soft sands, calm surroundings, and its gorgeous landscape make it an amazing beach experience.

If renting a car this drive is exceptional as you pass through gorges and valleys but the roads can be narrow and winding in parts. Day Trips by bus are also available.

Athens

If stopping in Athens, we recommend setting aside time to explore The Acropolis, which is home to some of the most remarkable structures of ancient Greece, including the renowned Parthenon. Below the Acropolis, you'll find The Plaka District, a charming neighbourhood filled with cobblestone streets, cafes, and a rich history. If you have extra time, consider venturing to the colossal Temple of Olympian Zeus, the king of the gods.

Loutro

For a memorable experience, consider a day trip from Rethymno, which includes a scenic boat ride along the coast and the opportunity to discover the charm and beauty of Loutro. With its idyllic setting and relaxed vibe, Loutro is the perfect place to unwind and immerse yourself in authentic Cretan living.

Loutro cannot be accessed by car so you must either get the ferry both ways or take an amazing two hour hike to or from the tiny fishing village along the breathtaking coastal cliffs.

Kalypso Beach

A very different beach, Kalypso has no sand but instead offers a craggy inlet of immediately deep crystal blue waters surrounded by cliffs with beach beds and amenities close at hand.

Margarites Village

Located in rolling green hills above Rethymno, this is known as the pottery village with its many traditional pottery studios.

The tradition of pottery goes back many generations in this village and you will be able to find an elder to show you how the pots are hand thrown.
